Saw these ducks at a pond in Portland, Oregon. I’m pretty sure they are mallards, but would like confirmation just in case. Sorry for the poor photos, I didn’t have a good camera with me so I had to resort to phone with binoculars. The first picture is of one duck and the last one is of the second duck. The first duck was darker than the second and had a slightly different body shape. It also behaved a little differently than the second duck. They both had a large white spot on their chest/lower neck. The rest of their bodies were very dark in color. They looked like they had black heads and black bills. I’m pretty new to birding and have very little experience with waterfowl. Can someone explain the coloration of these mallards to me? Is it a result of cross breeding, pigmentation, or are they some kind of domestic duck? Thanks
