Squawking at night and birds in ski area

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

1. About 11 PM, Aug. 12, near Alcalde, Rio Arriba Co., NM.  (I was looking not very successfully for meteors.)  Whatever this was kept the squawks up for about 15 minutes.  Pinyon-juniper scrub near semi-rural houses that could easily have had tame birds.

2. Is it safe to call this a Pine Grosbeak? Sorry, no other shots.  Santa Fe Ski area, Aug. 13.

I also recorded this call, which I think is more diagnostic.

3. Any thoughts on this sparrow?  There were plenty of juvenile juncoes and chippies around, but this seems to have a lot of white for those two.  Same date and place as above.  Sorry again, no other shots again.

Could 1 just be a weird Nighthawk. Sounds similar to one.

Thanks.  They're not common at all around here, and it seemed a little weird to me too (though I haven't heard one in years), but maybe it's the best possibility.

You are also correct on 2 being a Pine Grosbeak 👍

Thank you. I don't see those often.
