What type of predatory bird is this?

Recommended Posts

These photos were taken in late April in suburban Vermont around 10 AM.

This bird landed on a branch in my backyard then flew into the hedges (preying on some mourning doves in there, I believe).

At first I thought it was a falcon but upon further review with my bird guide I am thinking now this was a male Cooper's Hawk (too big to be sharp-shinned).

Can anyone confirm or deny? Never seen one this close. Thank you!!

Cooper's Hawk is correct!  Note the dark cap that contrasts with the light gray nape.  Adult Sharpies have dark napes.

Thank you! We never get predatory birds in our yard despite all the songbirds, squirrels and chipmunks. I have never seen one in the wild this close.
