smittyone@cox.net
Seen late yesterday afternoon in western Iowa. When they're female/immature, they both look the same to me. It seemed Grosbeak-sized since Buntings are about finch-sized, right?
akandula
Yes, that’s a Blue Grosbeak with the massive bill.
Soohegan
Is this the same as my bird here:
Tony Leukering
The triangular head is also a very good clue, but needs to be used with caution. Your bird is decidedly an adult female, as its plumage is so worn as to nearly remove the distinctive cinnamon wing bars; juveniles and immatures have much fresher plumage at this time of year and sport whacking big cinnamon wing bars.
