@Aveschapines Is there any way to comment on the Download Files? Because people post bird ID questions on there and we can't reply to answer them...

I'm not Aveschapines but I can answer the question for you.

Go to the Downlaod Files page.

Under ''What's New'' is a photo of a bird or a topic.

Click on the one you want to see.

Example: Mystery Warbler 1.0.0 click on it

Under the person's name [author of the post]

Click on ''Find their other files''

On the left is a side bar...click POSTS

Click on the topic name you want / Example: Mystery Warbler 1.0.0

Scroll down to respond.

Hope this helps! ?

Thank you @lonesome55dove since Aveschapines didn't know the answer ?. I honestly had never paid attention to the "downloads" feature. It seems that I as a moderator can add a message to the downloads but I'm honestly not sure what that does. If someone wants to add a test download so I can experiment that would be fine. I'm not sure I'd be monitoring this area for lost members needing ID help though, and my comment would be to post in the ID forums.

However, the first picture with an ID request that I clicked on didn't have any posts by the user; it appears they showed up, posted a picture in downloads, and didn't get any answers and have had no further activity on the site. This leaves me very confused as to how a new user wanders into the downloads area and posts their ID request there without noticing the forums and ID resources there! Also not 100% sure what exactly the downloads area is for - I guess for files that people would like to make available to share with other users?

You are welcome! After I answered the question I thought, ''Yikes! I shouldn't have done that.'' but it was too late to edit my post by then.  Which ID request did you try to look at? Figuring out how to get to the ''author's'' page where there is more content is somewhat confusing and a lot of clicking.

No problem! I appreciate your help. I did get to the author's content page but there was no content there other than the download; no posts or other content. This is the download I was talking about; when you go to the user's page there's no other content there, and no posts.

Oh, good! I was afraid I'd overstepped my bounds, however, I will be more careful in the future. ?

Yes, some people have just posted a photo then nothing else so I think until they post more content you can not make any comments on that post. I think you can send the OP a private message tho. ?

Don't give it another thought! Many of you are more familiar with the details of the site than I may be, and about how things work in the Internet in general. Since it wasn't a case of problem behavior by a member or something like that it's great for users to help each other and me!

That's true; I didn't think of a private message but that should work. It's really too bad that apparently people have tried to get ID help this way and, I can only assume, left thinking ther was no help forthcoming. I still don't understand how they get there though, when the forums are so obvious!

That's not very many!! It just means that I have been busy for a while...

I have never had more than 12 at once. I always check them before I do anything else when I get on the forum. I like to be organized.

I have been dealing with an annoying glitch for a few months now. When using the "next unread topic" button on the bottom of the page it often takes me to the bottom of the next thread where I have to scroll up to find the first new post. It's not a major issue, usually I only have to scroll up one or two post or sometimes just half a post, but on occasion it will take me to the bottom of a brand new thread and there may be 5 - 10 posts to scroll up to get to the first unread post. I have tried rebooting my computer and browser to see if the glitch is on my end with no changes. Has anyone else had similar issues using the next unread feature?

On another note, when holding the mouse over a member's name it usually shows details like post count, when they joined, when they last visited, and their reputation count. This applies to ALL members names with the exception of one name. I am wondering if there's something this member has done to prevent anyone from seeing their recent activity or if there is a glitch with the membership that they may not even be aware of. So, I am curious if there's a problem somewhere with the membership or am I unaware of settings to hide that info. Any thoughts?

I should have added that the date joined is visible along with the post and reputation count, but there is no info on last visited or if they're currently viewing anything.

First issue: Click on your user name, then settings, then content read behavior. Make sure you've selected either "show first post" or "show first unread post". I have the first unread post option and I am taken to the first post in the thread on the "next unread" button.

Second issue: users can choose not to show their status (online or not, where they are on the site) in the privacy settings. I'm not sure if that prevents the recent activity from showing as well. If you can send me the member name in a private message (thank you for not mentioning them by name here) I can look and see if there seems to be an issue with the account.

Thanks @Aveschapines. I went to my Content Read Behaviour and it is set to "take me to the beginning". My other two options are "take me to comments I haven't read", and " take me to the latest comment". I don't think I have ever changed any of those settings and always been happy with the way things have worked, with the exception of this occasional annoyance. I am usually taken to the next unread post in the next unread topic but now and then I am taken to the bottom of the page instead of where I would usually be taken. If it's not an occasional glitch on the website and others aren't having similar experiences, then I'll just put it down to a glitch on my end.

I also went to my privacy and security settings and just seeing the box that says "Hide My Online Status" explained everything. I wasn't aware that feature was available and I guess I have only noticed one member using it, but the fact that it is there answers my question, thanks again.

Yes. The exact same problem.

LOL...here's a prime example of annoying. I clicked the next read topic to be brought to this thread and replied to @Aveschapines post only to find out that I totally missed Kevin's post, which should have been the first unread post to show. I guess I didn't think to scroll up this time. Glad to hear it's not a problem on my end, sorry to hear that it affects you too, @Kevin.

Interesting.  I started using 'Unread Content' and 'Next unread topic' for a few months.  I don't think I ever had the problem recently described, but always went to the first unread post in each thread.  However, I've noticed that I sometimes missed posts altogether.  I'm not sure how to explain it, but when I go to Unread Content, and count the number of posts there, then keep track of the number of posts I get by using Next Unread Topic, often there would end up being fewer posts by the time they were all cleaned out.  Anyway, I went into my profiler and changed 'take me to the first post' to 'take me to to comments I haven't read'.  When I then went back into 'Unread Content' I found a couple of posts that had apparently been missed earlier.  I'll try to watch to see what happens going forward.

I wonder about missing posts too, @JP48. I had dismissed some missed posts as part of me not scrolling up to see them but wonder if maybe they weren't there the first time around. I know that I sometimes stumble upon an entirely unread thread that shows that the first post was hours ago but there were no new topics just a few minutes earlier when I was looking for new content to read. Weird.
