Site Problems and Questions for the Moderators

I know that I sometimes stumble upon an entirely unread thread that shows that the first post was hours ago but there were no new topics just a few minutes earlier when I was looking for new content to read. Weird.

Not just me, then.  It's good to know that someone else has noticed this.  As for your other prob;em, I don't have that - really quite the opposite.  Very occasionally I'm sent to a post that is several above the one that is marked as the first unread one.  It will be interesting to see whether personal settings have any effect on these things.

Thanks @Aveschapines. I went to my Content Read Behaviour and it is set to "take me to the beginning". My other two options are "take me to comments I haven't read", and " take me to the latest comment". I don't think I have ever changed any of those settings and always been happy with the way things have worked, with the exception of this occasional annoyance. I am usually taken to the next unread post in the next unread topic but now and then I am taken to the bottom of the page instead of where I would usually be taken. If it's not an occasional glitch on the website and others aren't having similar experiences, then I'll just put it down to a glitch on my end.

I also went to my privacy and security settings and just seeing the box that says "Hide My Online Status" explained everything. I wasn't aware that feature was available and I guess I have only noticed one member using it, but the fact that it is there answers my question, thanks again.

I'm pretty sure that this setting is new in the most recent site update we had a while ago. I stumbed on it a while back and the default was "take me to the beginning", and I changed it to "take me to comments I haven't read". Also if you click on the star or dot beside the post it takes you to the first unread post; that's what I used to use. I don't use the "next unread" button but when I played with it this morning it seemed to take me to the beginning of the thread (it didn't go to any threads I had read partially). So I would expect that it would take you to the spot indicated in this preference. I'll play with it a little and see if I can figure anything else out.

OK; I tried all three of the options and mostly the "next unread topic" button seemed to take me to the spot according to the setting (although once it took a few minutes for it to change over); but I did run into the error a couple of times, where it took me to the end of the thread even though I had it set to first unread. So I'm not sure what to say but maybe it is an error or bug.

I hope I am posting this in the right place. When I try to access the forums, many times I am redirected to a page claiming my IPhone has multiple viruses, and the only way to fix it is install an app. I don’t, of course, as it is fake, but it is annoying, and it takes me several tries to get here. It has only happened on this website. I’m not sure if it is a problem with the site or my phone, but I thought I would let you know, just in case.

Hmmm that sounds very annoying. I haven't seen that at all but I don't have an iPhone and I almost never log into WhatBird on my Android. But it sounds like a virus. Can you do a scan on your iPhone? I may be way off base here.

Also - what exactly is happening? Are you clicking on a link or URL stored in your browser? If so I'd try deleting it and starting over typing in whatbird.com again. Hopefully other users will have better advice for you.

I search for “whatbird forums” in Safari and click on the search result that normally takes me here. It’s like one of those scam pop-ups trying to get you to install an app, or give personal info. It’s not real though. I will try to get screenshot if it happens again.

Maybe try typing "whatbird.com" instead? It does sound like a scam; it seems your virus warning may well be a virus itself. Can you turn off pop-ups on your iPhone?

When the page loads, save it as a favorite / bookmark.  Then you won't have to search and you'll always go to the right page.

Agreed, this is what I usually do. However I just tried searching up "whatbird forums" and I clicked on the first thing that popped up and had no issues.

I will try this.

Never search for anything more than once or twice.  If you're going to the site more often than that, bookmark it.

Also, always look at a link before you click it.  Not the fancy title but the actual web link / URL listed below that, the part that starts HTTPS://.  If that URL doesn't contain the name of the web page you are trying to reach, it's probably bogus.  Check the next few search results and see if they have URLs that are more likely to be correct.

Okay, I'll get off my professional network administrator soapbox now.  Sorry about the rant.

I have this same issue, about 3/4ths of the time I open the forums on my phone, this happens. I just ignore it and reopen them a few minutes later. I'm almost glad for this problem because the only time when I try to get on through my phone is when I'm out birding, and I really don't need to be getting on here while I'm birding.

Are you also doing a search to find the site on your phone? If so try using a stored link oor typing in the URL directly as suggested above.

Yes, there was a problem that I reported and was fixed by this morning. Can you tell me what posts are missing? Thanks!

From what I can see, any posts that are newer than 23 hours have disappeared, for example the "is this robin a redwing" topic is missing several posts.
