Site Problems and Questions for the Moderators

Recommended Posts

@Cyanocitta cristata Please try again on your old account. I removed the ban.

Yes; it was automatically sent to moderation because you included Chinese chararters, which are being screened to prevent the spamming (and it's working, thank goodness). I approved the post and I assumed that would also reverse the ban; I'm sorry this happened but now I know!

If you still can't get in let me know, but it shows your account as not banned at this point so I think it'll be fine.

That's weird, I had already unflaged her account, it showed that she could post normally now. Why would the account gotten banned again?

@Kevin @Quiscalus quiscula

I don't know! I had actually approved the post a few minutes after it was posted; I had assumed that would be enough. I don't know why it didn't take, or why it didn't work when you unflagged it. Fortunately (well, not so fortunately for Quiscalus) this is the only one that has gotten automatically moderated and wasn't spam. I hope it won't happen again, and again I apologize. Quiscaulus, I'm glad you got back on.

I'm going to humbly recommend that a blanket automatic ban on Chinese characters is too broad a brush, as this demonstrated, and something more targeted would be better. Given the repeated nature of the spam, perhaps something that looks for one of the key phrases instead?

@PaulKWith all due respect, you haven't had to delete dozens of spam posts a day. Believe me, we have tried a lot of more conservative measures that haven't worked. These spammers are beyond clever and it's VERY hard to keep them out. They are relentless. The spam has been a burden to your two volunteer mods and has eaten up a lot of administrator time that could be better spent improving the site in other ways.

I'd like to humbly recommend that we avoid using Chinese characters; is it really necessary?

I must say anytime I've seen a post here notifying the mods of a new batch of spam I've gone looking out of curiosity and only once have I ever found any even only an hour or two afterwards.  Our trusty mods must really like the stuff to gobble it up so fast and leave the plate licked so clean there's nothing left for me but a salty odor 😋

One time I was in the middle of reporting a spam post, my second and final report of that particular batch. My report couldn't go through ... because all those spam posts were being deleted as I was typing. I can't remember if there had been a report on this thread. Kudos to the fast response of @Kevin and @aveschapinas in deleting the spam posts.
