Site Problems and Questions for the Moderators

Recommended Posts

OK; all 3 methods worked, but the "choose files" left the photo at the bottom of the post (the no-tailed grackle) while the other two inserted the photo where the cursor was. Also the preview of the Cowbirds and the Flicker appeared during editing, while the Grackle just appeared as a thumbnail at the bottom.

Hope this helps people!

Is that a subspecies of Northern Flicker, or a different species entirely?

Hi @Aveschapines. I try to keep a low profile and was waiting to see if anyone else commented first but they didn't.

I'm old school and mainly use my desktop for WhatBird viewing. I was quite happy with the previous format and I'm sure I will adjust to the new one but...

... where do I find the brightness control - I may have to start wearing sunglasses!!

If it is only me then feel free to ignore this but personally a minimal reduction in the overall whiteness/brightness would be wonderful (switching from another website to this one is quite jarring).

PS. Keep up the good work.

The upgrade looks nice, but is there still an option in a given thread to mark all as read. Sometimes when I get way behind, like I am now, it's a helpful feature.

I just found it in the three bars at the top right of the page. It looks like it marks the entire forum as read. But that's good enough.

It's always an adjustment. I just browsed through the settings and found a couple I like (you can now set it to take you to unread content or the last post automatically when you click on a thread ? ) but I don't see a brightness control for the site. I have this on the keyboard on my laptop, although I admit I haven't had a problem with the brightness. (Another site I use often changed their look a while back and there have been a lot of complaints about too much brightness there, so maybe it's just not something that affects me?)

I'm not thrilled with the little sidebar on the right but I've mostly been ignoring it; maybe I should see if it actually has something of use to me before I pass judgement.

And thank you ?

Yeah, I don't see a way to mark a single thread as read; but you could go to the last post to achieve that, couldn't you? Are you on a phone? The "mark site read" was one of the first things I noticed; on my laptop it's in the light blue bar at the top of the page, right-hand side, next to "unread content".

Yes, I'm on Android at the moment. I haven't tried the PC yet.

I also noticed that new members now have a little waving hand icon on their avatars, and I have something - a shield maybe? - that indicates that I'm a moderator. If you hover on these icons it gives their meaning.

Shouldn't your icon be a big stick? :classic_laugh:

Why does Flickr no longer work for posting photos?

It looks like the new forum doesn't allow BBCode anymore. ☹️

Here is one way you can embed a photo from Flickr:

1. Get the BBCode from Flickr and copy it into the comment box.  This is the BBCode for my Swainson's Thrush photo:

[url=https://flic.kr/p/2jFBviF][img]https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50331385213_67a00a30d2_k.jpg[/img][/url][url=https://flic.kr/p/2jFBviF]Swainson's Thrush[/url] by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/birdnuts/]The Bird Nuts[/url], on Flickr

2. Copy the portion in between the img tags (in bold letters above).

3. Click the Other Media button at the bottom right of the comment box, select Insert Image From URL, then paste the URL in there.  From there you can double click on the photo to resize it and add a link, etc.  Like so:

There is a Mark Forum As Read button at the top right.  It's beside the Sort By menu under the big blue Start New Topic button....at least on PC...

Thanks. I did find that on my phone eventually. And I actually prefer being able to mark individual forums as read, instead of the whole site. For instance, I would never mark the photo sharing sites as read. I like being able to tell exactly what I've seen and not seen.
