Can't tell which it is. It may be a young one. I can't see the body to see the stripes.

Thanks

This is a male House Finch. Note the stout bill and brown streaking on the flanks.

Something seems wrong...What's up with the straight, tiny beak?

Haha yeah...I meant that the culmen is pretty straight and the bill looks smaller than normal.  Sorry for exaggerating...  It IS molting, so maybe that's why it looks strange to me.

If it's a Purple, then it cannot be "a young one." Or, at least, it cannot be <1 year old. Purple and Cassin's finches exhibit delayed plumage maturation (DPM). That is, young males do not attain red color until their second fall. House Finches do NOT exhibit DPM; they get red plumage in their first fall.

Note that we can see the top of the bill in a side view: The bird's head is rotated just enough to obscure the bill shape.

Ah, yes.  I see what you're saying.  Thanks!

So now I'm confused. I'm fairly new so I don't know what all this is your saying.

I don't know what the letters and abbreviations mean.

Sorry

So it's a male house finch?
