Sandpiper, Plover? What do I have here? I’m stumped. Photographed today at Edisto Island Beach, S.C. Thank you.

For those birding near Edisto who may not be familiar, I'll put in a plug for Botany Bay WMA.

Will- I think my birds are too small to be this type. Plus the Sandpiper has the hind toe that the Sanderling does not.

Actually, Sanderling is quite a bit larger than Semipalmated Sandpiper. That said, absolute size is very difficult to judge in the field. Also, Sanderlings are the ones which lack a hind toe, not Semipalmated Sandpipers.

You are right in that these are Sanderlings- count the toes. You can see that none have hind toes (the frontmost bird in the first photo appears to have one, but on closer inspection it's a pebble).

Heck, you can't go wrong anywhere on the southern SC coast, from Savannah NWR to Murrell's Inlet.  Tons of good year-round bird.

Now, where'd I put that check from SC DNR?
