Your checklist of the day!

I ran down to the refuge after work to meet some birder friends to chase a rare Kentucky warbler that had been spotted this morning.  We were unable to find it and left as the day's storm started:

I stuck around for a while as I needed to find something I had dropped.  I found it, and then ran into a friend who showed up to chase the KEWA.  By that time the downpour had subsided, and we went birding in a light drizzle.  My friend found the bird, but I did not:

A rare day without any media, but I had nothing I felt like sharing.

I ran down to the boardwalk, as folks had incredible checklists there this morning, reporting three potential lifers, a Canada Warbler, a Swainson's Thrush, and a Veery.  I was unable to find any of those birds, but nonetheless, had a good checklist on the boardwalk and surrounding area:

Great checklist, as I got the Chestnut-sided Warbler lifer I was after.  I also got a FOY Tennessee Warbler.  Good number of species for the Boardwalk as well:

I started a separate checklist for the other areas of the refuge I covered.  An OK number of species for the distance travelled, but the real treat was all of the Bobolinks.  I saw one report from May of five individuals at the refuge, and another report from last year had an observation of one individual, so this was tremendous!

We went up to St. George, Utah, for the weekend, and I got a few firsts of the year, and a lifer Canyon Wren! It's not like they're particularly rare, just that the best places to see them are out of the way and generally very popular, so I tend to avoid them. No photo, but I did record some audio.

Saturdayhttps://ebird.org/tripreport/159894

My mom had a conference in Alviso that I was able to tag along, there I saw many Vaux's Swifts, the most I've seen ever although nothing like the numbers seen earlier this month in Marin. Also had my county bird Virginia's Rail calling in the marsh, heard some Marsh Wrens singing in the rushes, got my state bird Common Gallinule, had a super photogenic Least Sandpiper bathing by the Boat Ramp, and witnessed a California Gull unsuccessfully trying to harass a Forster's Tern into dropping its food. Unfortunately, there were also tons of other people enjoying the marsh and the rails were not willing to go out into the open in such a noisy environment.

Nothing rare but still a very nice trip, I arrived just before sunrise and was able to watch the sun rising over the lights of Redwood City and Bair Island. The best bird of the trip was a Yellow Warbler that flew in from the Bay and landed in a eucalyptus tree. I also had incredible views of a small family of Bluebirds and a large congregation of egrets and white pelicans were gathered in the cattail-lined Phelps Slough, feeding aggressively on what I believe to be mosquitofish. (I'm not aware of any other fish species inhabiting the pond)

From Saturday:

Pretty slow for a tour, but it's not the guide's fault.  I did, however, get my Yellow-throated Vireo lifer.  On Saturday in the lifers thread, I posted pics of the species from the subsequent checklist:

I spent the rest of the day birding with friends:

The next checklist was uneventful:

However, I then got my Swainson's Thrush and Veery lifers here:

If you dont mind me asking, what happened to your camera?

If I knew I'd go get it. It seems to have sprouted wings and flown off. It's in a pretty large bag it isn't like it falls off in a crack or behind something.

I had it beside the computer prepped up for the next morning to take with me(was delivering two llamas and then going to my grandparents). When I got to my grandparents it was not in the back seat(but everything else I had carried out at the same time was), didn't really think too much of it as I thought I must have set it down when getting water to take with and not picked it back up. But alas it's not here. The only two options we can come up with is I set it on the truck, which would be really weird as I never set things on vehicles, or.... I did leave the truck unlocked and out of sight for maybe 2-3 minutes and there was a lady waking/jogging by... but that just seems so unlikely... It was decent area, medium sized houses, with about 1-5 acres sections. Not really the folks you would expect to steal things out of the back seat while your back is turned for a few moments.

Yesterday, a tourist had a really good explanation for her (unconfirmed) Florida Scrub-Jay sighting here.  The area is only 2.4 miles from the last confirmed sighting in my county back in 2018, and an appropriate habitat, so I chased it.  No luck, but I'll try again.  This was my first time here, but from looking at other checklists, looks like I got a decent number of species for the hotspot:

I'd been irresponsibly not chasing the local, rare, Thick-billed Vireo, so I got with the program.  The weather didn't agree with me though, as I was unable to find the bird whilst looking in the rain.  Not much else to say given the conditions.  I'll be back:

A failed mission to get a Thick-billed Vireo lifer.  Conditions were good for the chase today, so I'm disappointed.  Since a number of birders have seen the TBVI the last few days in the exact spot I was looking for it, I think it was there, but I was unable to spot it.  It was otherwise a decent checklist for the ground covered, and I got some excellent audio:

For songbirds, I’d really suggest getting to spots as early as possible. I understand this isn’t possible for everyone but it’s just a thought.

This is my least favorite county hotspot.  It may have potential for additional species, but I find the place very boring.  I only keep going back to get a Wild Turkey county lifer, and I keep missing.  Today was a frustrating matter of timing.  Hikers told me that turkeys showed up in the parking lot area 40 minutes before, and 10 minutes after I arrived.  Not much else to talk about here:

Always great to get a lifer, (the Golden-winged Warbler) especially on the first chase.  This spot has a lot more to offer, but I spent most of the time under a few trees looking for the GWWA:
