I tried out birdstat, definitely a cool tool. Although, it doesn't appear to include a summary of checklists by species, the one thing that kicked off this topic.

For some reason I was under the impression that it did, I guess not. You can only view your highest big days.

Well, I get this far in Excel.  Apparently 'Count' is the equivalent of Google's 'CountUnique', and it was the default.  Darned if I can figure out how to sort it.  The usual SORT option on the Data tab is disabled, and sorting doesn't appear to be an option on the column heading.  Google time, I guess.

I also now remember why I never 'got' pivot tables.  I don't understand how the Columns, Rows, and Fields boxes interact.  I looked for a tutorial but all I found was how to drag fields into each box.  I don't understand how to choose WHICH fields go where.  In this case, @neilpa provided detailed instructions, but I don't think I would have ever gotten there on my own.

You right-click any cell in the column you want to sort.  A quick check shows that works in a data table too, I'm just used to using the menu for sorts and never noticed it on the right-click menu.

Now, how the heck does one search for a specific checklist by number in eBird?  Their own FAQ doesn't cover it?

EDIT: never mind.  I went back to the data table and searched for the checklist number.  It turned out to be a location where I've submitted only one checklist.

Macaulay will filter by checklist number.  Any of the resulting media files will include a link back to the original checklist.  Obviously, this won't work if the checklist didn't have any media files attached and thus isn't in Mac at all.

I had this in my original post but it was buried in the other instructions. If you have the S######## value (where # are the actual digits) replace that part in the URL directly - https://ebird.org/checklist/S########

Yes, you did; no, it wasn't buried; yes, I read it and completely forgot it by the time I was finished mucking around with the pivot table.

Just for giggles, I tried to generate a count of species by location.  The best I could do was a total sum of all individual birds reported at a location.  Second place went to a list of individual species at a location but I couldn't figure out how to total them.  Fortunately, I just have to install Excel at work; I don't have to crunch large blocks of data with it.  I'm sure I could find some for-pay training if I needed it.

Thanks.

I’m still uploading my photos from Florida, but I finished for this amazing list I had! I posted it already, but I’ll link it again now that all the photos are up.

Whoah, simply awesome, great variety of your classic Florida stuff. Super envious of the PUGA and Swamphen!

I've done this before, but depending on your level of Excel-fu it's likely not "easy".

Request an export of all your eBird data at https://ebird.org/downloadMyData . You'll get an email with a link to download a CSV file. It contains all your eBird observations, one row per-species (really taxa), per-checklist.

Import that file into Excel (or Google Sheets) and create a pivot table over the data. Use the "Submission ID" (e.g. checklist) field as the Rows to group by. Use the "Common Name" field as the Values and change the summarize dropdown to COUNTUNIQUE. You can then change the Rows to sort descending based on the counts.

The URL for a specific checklist is then https://ebird.org/checklist/S######## where you replace the S######## with value in the "Submission ID" column.

Here's a couple of screenshots of what this looks like in Google Sheets

I've thought about making a small webpage that would automatically do this. Upload your eBird export and it could show this and other interesting tidbits that aren't easily exposed on the myebird page.

I never heard of the COUNTUNIQUE formula.  I will have to try that.  I just ran a count formula at the top row of the sheet my PT is on to get that number.  Thank you for that.

Yeah, I was mistaken when I said I thought COUNT was the Windows Excel equivalent of the Google COUNTUNIQUE.  That misconception is why I was having problems getting a count of species by location.  I couldn't find a way in Excel that did the same thing.

I drove by this spot earlier in the morning, and no Lapland Longspur flock there.  My other travels took me back around close enough I tried again.  High count for the county for eBird of 203 Lapland Longspur.  Probably more that were out of the frame of the photo I chose to count.  One of my other pics have have shown more also, but who want to count over and over again.
