Your checklist of the day!

I'm still learning the boardwalk.  This was my first late afternoon to early evening trip there, and the number of species was much better than when I'm there in the late morning or early to midafternoon.

It was a very bad day for photos, but I always get a lot of good audio here and decided to upload more than I normally do.

It was a good trip.  Not a ton of species, but I don't think I missed much.

I spent nearly three hours on the boardwalk and stuck around until after dark, hoping to actually see the barred owl I heard last night, but it was neither seen, nor heard.  The only birds I saw that I couldn't identify at all were a flock of four small birds flying over quickly in bad lighting.  My ears are tuned well to the sounds of the usual suspects at the hotspot.  Merlin thinks she heard an Eastern Phoebe, as well as a Hermit Thrush, but I don't trust either ID, so, I didn't report them.  The Short-tailed Hawk was a hotspot lifer.

The regularly scheduled 'Last Saturday of the Month' walk at a local park.  There were several notables for late October, including some personal first-of-season birds (Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Blue-headed Vireo, Yellow-rumped Warbler), some late end-of-summer hangers-on (Common Yellowthroat, Black-and-white Warbler), and a Rusty Blackbird in full breeding colors.

Any time you...

  • Have been traveling for more than a mile

Does this mean anytime you have been birding and your route is over a mile, or does it mean if you drive to another location that is over a mile away?

Smaller distances and more precise data are generally preferred. In all honesty, I never stop a checklist at a mile.

Two checklists today:

As usual, this place was awful for photo opportunities, but any checklist with a lifer (Pine Warbler) is a great checklist.

Great walk.  Got some good photos.  I'm surprised I was able to observe 29 species for the short (.64 miles) distance I covered.  Now that I'm getting better at this, I need to dedicate a day to bird the entire 3.05 miles (+ the parking lot) of this hotspot, to see how many species I can find.

Technically yesterday's checklists.  I had the best birding day of my life with the main one, having gotten 8 lifers!  One of our county reviewers, as well as another very experienced birder were on the pier when I showed up.  The day would have been much worse for me without them.  See the checklist notes for details:

Second checklist as I chased a Reddish Egret into the parking lot across the street, hoping in vain for a photo op:

I'm convinced I saw and photographed the birds, but I must have uploaded the wrong batch.  I'm keeping the observation but have deleted the eBird media.  I uploaded them here now, if you are able to identify them:
