I stuck around the area a little longer looking for a Cedar waxwing lifer that every other birder in the county seems to be finding, but the bird still eludes me - https://ebird.org/checklist/S126016497

Listed to Cedar Waxwings calls often. Once you know it, you’ll be able to recognize it easily. I locate most of mine by sound first.

I'm reasonably certain I heard the high-pitched whistle at least a few times this week, but I don't have any recordings.  I know I don't need one to claim a lifer, but I'm going to hold out.  People in my area are reporting them daily with increasing frequency and with increasing numbers, so I'm confident I'll get a firm ID soon.

This struggle reminds me of when I was after an elusive Chimney Swift lifer this past summer.  I finally got one in early August

Six new checklists today with a lot of new specialties:

First, the ones that tripped the Rare Bird Alert:

  • Lesser Black-backed Gull (two separate sightings)
  • Pacific Loon
  • Mexican Duck
  • African Collared-Dove

And a few other goodies:

  • All three North American mergansers
  • White-winged Dove
  • Common Loon
  • Horned Grebe

I've appended the trip report I linked a few days ago to contain all the lists from this week of birding with my father (totaling 113 species):
https://ebird.org/tripreport/100372

Use the "checklists" tab to see the six from today.

I took a light day today.

Here, I ran to the beach in a failed effort to get a Semipalmated Plover lifer.  I stuck around for a little while for a proper checklist and some photos:

I had expected this short trail to be boring but while I was in the area, I felt some obligation to the county to walk it and report the birds.  I got a surprisingly high number of species for this hotspot in the middle of a day, and most importantly got a photo lifer.  I've had four audio observations of a Great Crested Flycatcher, and finally got some good photos:

Just a quick walk, hoping for a Ceder Waxwing lifer, but no lifers today:
