The Bird Nuts
Orange-crowned Warbler. Note the dark eyeline that splits the eyering and the faint streaking on the breast.
Connor Cochrane
Looks like the Eastern celata subspecies. Where are you located? We can see the gray head, and a pretty dull yellow breast. It almost looks like orestera though, which is weird if this is also in Winnipeg. The closest breeding Orange-crowneds to Winnipeg are celata; it is the subspecies that breeds to the north (and there are summer records in or very near Winnipeg). The closest breeding areas for orestera are ~1000 km to the WSW. Having an orestera in Winnipeg would, indeed, be weird! In my experience, field ID of Orange-crowned subspecies is very difficult, as there is plumage brightness overlap among the three mainland subspecies, that is, between Eastern (celata) and Interior (orestera) and between Interior and Pac-slope (lutescens). The really dull Easterns are straightforward, as are the really bright Pac-slopes. Almost everything in between is nearly a guess far from breeding ranges.
