Heavily streaked underparts in late September greatly winnow the sparrow field. The lack of a WHITE central crown stripe  and the long tail rule out Savannah. The lack of an obvious white eye ring, a relatively simple face pattern, and the long, rufous tail rule out Vesper. The rufous wings and the long, rufous tail rule out Lark Bunting. There just aren't any other reasonable choices.
