Pannetone
I saw a bird at my feeder today I have never seen before. It was eating sunflower seeds. It was about the size of a cardinal, maybe slightly bigger. It had an orangish brown chest, it’s wings were black and white spotted like a towhee, but it’s head was striped, not solid. I couldn’t get a pic, but maybe someone can help?
akandula
Welcome to Whatbird! Was it a Black-headed Grosbeak? It would be helpful to include location.
Pannetone
Oops sorry. In western North Carolina. It may have been migrating thru, because I have never seen on before.
Pannetone
No, it looked like a towhee, except a striped head.
Avery
Maybe a young or female Rose-breasted Grosbeak? The only birds of the size you are describing that will go ON a feeder that I can think of are grosbeaks.
