gpoole
I zoomed in on this bird that was way out over the harbour and thought it was an immature Northern Gannet with the black tipped wings, but on viewing the two pictures at home, it looks like it might be an immature Red-throated Loon. It's flight pattern was steady flapping like a loon whereas Gannets tend to flap and then glide a little. Can you help with these poor images? Seanbirds
Hmm. This is a tough one. I'll let the experts handle it. @akandula @Tony Leukering @The Bird Nuts @Kevin @Connor Cochrane @Benjamin
Connor Cochrane
By body shape we can eliminate Gannet. This is a loon. Body and bill shape should eliminate Common/Yellow-billed. Extensive white on the face looks fine for Red-throated. Edited October 16, 2020 by Connor Cochrane 1

I was leaning towards the loon myself.

Connor Cochrane
2 minutes ago, Charlie Spencer said: Break it down!! Gannets don't look as long , wider neck. Unless it's molting the color pattern isn't similar either. It looks too long for Common to me, but that can be tricky to judge from photo. It could be a common, but the white on the face looks too extensive to me. 1
gpoole
Thanks for figuring this out for me. I'll report it as a Red-throated Loon.
Kevin
Definitely a Loon, but I am not definite of which Loon it is.
