I can't figure out an easy way to get photos from my camera to my tablet so the app can access them.

You can choose the option "Take a Photo" and take a BOC image. Merlin is surprisingly accurate with horrible photos.

using an app doesn't seem likely to improve my ID skills.

I was suggesting it more for regions in which you have no idea what the birds are. If you're proactive and also read the description of the bird underneath the photos, you'll get better at IDing.

“Back-of-camera” image. Just take a photo with your tablet of the photo on your camera display.

I occasionally take a FOM (Front Of Monitor) shot with my phone for Merlin which I find easier to do than a BOC but still not ideal (I don't need the ID while I am still on the trail).

Quite a long time ago I did a search to see if there were any desktop apps (IDs from jpegs) but had no luck. I'm guessing this is still the case?

Thanks, I'd never heard the expression before.

Why would someone post one of these to eBird / Macaulay instead of the actual photo taken with the camera?

It's called lazy haha... I do that when I need a photo because it's rare and I'm too lazy to do the whole sd card thing. However, I did recently get an sd card adapter that plugs into my phone which helps a lot.

Congratulations! That is a good checklist...

Here is a good one I had on my birthday, with lots of lifers! https://ebird.org/checklist/S65548293  (I was never able to get many ducks before this.)

Remember, kiddies, while you're all taking classes at home, this counts as a Biology course!  Bookmark all your posts so you can show your work, esp. anything Tony L. 'liked'!  If you've taken photos, those should be good for lab credits!

Well, at least list it as community service on college applications!

Exactly! Just like how the robotics team at my competition won the top award by gloating about social media posts.

What bird photography cameras do ya'll use?

You should invest in a high-quality lens, which is more important than the camera body itself.

I personally use a Canon 7D Mark II with a Canon 100-400mm L IS II lens. It's a really nice combo for amateur photographers.

I agree. I use the Canon 80D with the Canon 75-300mm. Which is a good lens by any means. A semi-decent budget lens.

I use a bridge Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ70 I bought sight unseen for the 60X zoom.  While I'm happy enough with it to keep using it, I'm less than pleased with a couple of things.  If you're interested in post-processing .RAW images, the format this generates is semi-proprietary and the software isn't the friendliest.  The camera's auto-focus works well in most cases but if you need to go manual, the focus controls are cumbersome.

This is a four year old model and I don't know if newer ones have the same issues.  If you're looking to take photos for ID purposes, not artistic ones, you might look at newer Lumix models.
