I'm a bit confused. You have a creek in your yard?

Yes, it is about ten foot in the deepest spot, but we have dug it out, and built a dam. After that we built a dock, then a rope swing, and last week we added a slide.

The creek is feed by two forks which come together on our property, both which lead to a road in about a mile. One fork have several tanks on it which all leak, so when they have water, we have a nice steady (small) bit of water coming in keeping the water moving just enough to keep it nice. And by the way it isn't like a tank, the water is super clear(not like a pool), you can see the bottom just fine in the deepest spot if the sun is shining.

Jealous - around here it's big time illegal to dig out a pond - even on seasonal streams. I know several guys who have been fined $50k or more? One guy even just for building a bridge across a pond he built (on a trickle that probably only runs 3 months out of the year) 50 years ago before it was illegal - now his pond is somehow protected something or other.

Water quality regulations.

One of the only things that really sucks about being a kid birder is the fact that you can’t go anywhere!! At least not without begging one of your parents to take you, which isn’t often successful.

I feel this so much. Had to miss seeing a breeding family of Wilson’s Phalaropes because it was a 55 minute drive ? And there aren’t any good places within a short biking distance. How old do you have to be to start driving in Kansas?

I definitely agree. I almost never have a chance to test my birding skills, which I think are pretty good now. I like to go down to the river, a short walk, but I don't think all of my target birds will magically appear if I go there often enough. And then my sister goes rowing on a boat while I have to do sports, and sees two of my target birds without even looking for birds!

Yes, but that’s not too big of a deal for me. I can always see more in TX next time we’re down there.

I look at rare bird reports for different counties a lot, so that's how I know. There are zero rarities for my county, almost all of the time, though, and most rarities were reported like ten years ago.

You can get your learners permit as soon as 14,

And if the laws are the same as here, driving with a permit still requires an licensed adult in the car.  If you could convince an adult to ride shotgun for an hour, you could probably convince them to drive you in the first place.

Do any of y'all checked for local birding groups that may meet within bike range, or that may be able to arrange pick-up and drop-off?

That’s pretty much it. Maybe I could tell them it’s for driving practice… ?

gotta get those hours in, you know!

Wichita Audubon Society is the closest thing I can think of… I’ll look into it!

Birding groups here are all pretty far. The nearest audubon chapter is in troy, which isn't within biking distance. The Mohawk-Hudson bird club is pretty inactive, with an event about every month, and relatively mundane like counting nighthawks, although it would be nice to meet other birders. Thinking about joining, but even they meet a county over. The New York State Young Birder's club, affiliated with ABA, meets all over the state, in sometimes very far away places in New York State, even going down to the city and long island. It has very cool trips, though.
