My lens had barely been surviving for the past year and a week ago it finally kicked the bucket and decided to quite literally explode on me. I had a tough decision on what to do next, but I bit the bullet and purchased the canon RF 100-500 lens for a large portion of my savings. It should arrive before my road trip to Arizona which is nice.

New lens just arrived - a post sunset hummingbird pic. I was a little worried since I purchased a used lens but everything seems to be working fine so far

The quality of used gear depends a lot on who you purchase from.  Personally, I'd stick to B&H, Adorama, or similar outfit with a return policy and / or limited warranty.  I wouldn't buy from an individual on line, but that's just me.

I usually do, but B&H and Adorama didn’t have good enough deals when I was looking. I went to an unfamiliar site, MPB. The provide a warranty and such, i’ve never heard of them before this though.

I have heard very good things about MPB, but never bought anything through them. If your looking for something used Roberts Camera Shop usually has pretty good deals for the item, free shipping and 30 day returns.

What lens exploded?  Wasn’t a 400mm EF 5.6 was it?

Could somebody help me report the "Eastern Phoebe" photos on this checklist? Should be Eastern Wood-Pewee. Found it while doing a photo quiz. Thanks.

These "Hairy Woodpecker" photos have to be Downy.

I'm pretty sure this is a Hairy Woodpecker due to the lack of black spotting on the outer tail feathers.

Taking another look at it, yes. The other photo also gives me more Hairy vibes. 🤦‍♀️

I'm going to blame it on the fact I haven't seen these since being in Europe for three weeks.

Nice new profile photo @Quiscalus quiscula! Your photo I assume?

Unfortunately not. I found it online, usage rights were "free to share and use".

The reason for the change was that I did want to change it to a grackle photo I finally got, but that photo was not high resolution to begin with, and because of whatbird's low file size requirements I had to compress it multiple times. Eventually it looked more like a blob than a bird. Afterwards I couldn't find the photo I had originally used to change it back, so I found another one. Hopefully I'll have better luck with photographing grackles in the future.

You're welcome to any of these:
