The only time I ever saw one (in a place where there’s supposed to be plenty), It flew away the second it saw me. ?

Well you need to come visit me in Florida. The place where I took this photo has tons of them and because it is a City Park they are use to people. It is breeding season at this park right now and it gets crazy with Laughing Gulls, Royal Terns, Black Skimmers, Brown Pelicans and even a few American Oystercatchers.

The Skimmer was from our 2020 trip. That year, we spent every day birding the coast for about a week.

And you only saw one?!? I almost wonder if you were mistaking them for Royal/Caspian Terns. If you don't look through you bins it can be a pretty easy thing to do.

I was being pretty careful to identify them. After all, I was eBirding, and I wanted to get my ID’s straight.

Nice! When/where was this?

This is an old photo from 8-18 at Chatfield State Park in Colorado. Not sure how Kansas is but Swainson's Hawks are abundant in the summer in Colorado. Sadly, Florida not so much. I miss them.

Sorry I researched the wrong group of photos. This one was actually from April 2017 on the eastern plains not far from DIA.
