Woodpecker in Dhaka

Excellent, thanks! I was using birding hotspots on ebird to try to find it, but was only using the search term 'woodpecker.'

Brand new to me as were a few other birds that day.

Try using the eBird bar charts.  I went to the woodpecker family, opened a few species pages and found your bird.

Here is the charts for Dhaka.

Wow, that is very helpful. I had no idea bar charts existed. I've got lots of stuff I never reported b/c I couldn't figure out how to identify the birds (e.g., travelled to a country where I didn't have an ID guide). Sorting through them will be a lot easier than my usual 'hit or miss' approach.

Thanks for putting in the time to help.

I am glad I could help!

One last thing, you can find the bar charts on the eBird "explore" page

Okay, that was going to be my last post, but I thought of one more thing. Merlin Bird Id app. It is a worldwide bird identification app. You can add a photo and it will try to identify it, not that it would be right all of the time, but it might get you close to what you were looking for.

The other option is to go through five screens that have color, size, Ect. When you finish them it will come up with a list of suggestions.

You may already know all of this, but I didn't figure it hurt to mention it.

Thanks again. I'm not a Luddite, but my IOS devices are so old that Merlin won't run on them (needs 11 or higher). One of these days I'll get around to downloading an emulator for my laptop so I can actually access apps newer than 2011.

And if you want to make the long drive to Illinois, this just happened: https://twitter.com/skwinnicki/status/1327720035863965696

Kevin,

Finally got around to using Merlin for bird ID'ing, so thanks again. 22 new birds in the one location. Nothing unexpected for Dhaka, but among the latest was a Brahminy Kite who was kind enough to land right in front of me. Now slowly going through pictures from 2 summers ago in Portugal [where I also didn't have an ID book].
