  • Kevin changed the title to Your Favorite Bird of The Day!!

Didn't get out birding today, but my favorite birds I saw today was a couple of Lewis's Woodpecker that hung around in a big oak across the street from my house for a couple hours. I've had Lewis's fly over my house several times before this fall, but this was the first time I've actually had them perched. It's crazy how many Lewis's are around the valley this year!

Since the last time I was out birding was last weekend, I’ll go with that trip.

I went to a hotspot in northern Alabama that I saw had fields next to a river, and historically has had good sparrows. So I thought I’d give it a try! Immediately upon starting the trail I was met with huge numbers of swamp sparrows. First good sign. Farther along the trail I find some ducks and get some practice there. Two other birders greet me then move along the trail. I’m still looking through a group of sparrows. I keep going and spy a good sized patch of panicum grass in the trail, that had little patches of a darker, heavier grass. My first thought is to look for LeConte’s and Nelson’s. Literally the second I entered the panicum, that the two other birders has walked through minutes before, I see 2 LeConte’s flush and dive down in the darker grass. They then take turns popping up and perching OUT IN THE OPEN for me. Literally 8 feet in front of me. I wave the other birders back, AND THEY STAY. A Sedge Wren joins them, and as we are marveling in the glory of the friendly sparrows, I see movement at my feet, and the wren has crawled almost onto my leg, and I just see it’s little face peeking out at me from a clump of grass😆. I love sparrow season.

A Yellow Palm Warbler stole the show for me this morning. :) Spent a good while watching it forage in a bush (where it really matched the leaves) along with a couple of Western Palm Warblers, which made for a great comparison. Only my second time seeing one, so even though it's not a different species or anything, it still feels special.

Honourable mention for a seemingly late Grasshopper Sparrow too. Honestly thought I'd missed them for the year once they stopped singing, so actually seeing a silent one was a real surprise.

Yellow-billed Magpie was today's best bird, they're nothing special or rare around here, but they're such cool looking birds that don't really live anywhere not near California's Central Valley. Had one come up on the front porch this morning about five feet from the window which was really fun.
