Do you get out to bird much in the winter? This is the best time of year in most of the country to find them.

Or look for them when they’re migrating, riding the thermals north. That’s how I find most of mine.

The only time I spotted an accipiter in my yard during the twenty years I have lived here was last Fall. I came back from a birding trip and it was there having lunch on my deck but I had to shoot through a very dirty patio window and screen as it was only about 3m/10ft away.

The second photo is more typical, zipping past me at high speed.
