floraphile
28 April 2018 Baldwin co. AL I thought I could tell them apart, but I'm not certain that I can, if Mrs. is without Mister. Tips? Edited November 29, 2020 by floraphile correction
Avery
This is a grosbeak. Note the white on the face, overall size, and multicoloredness. Purple finches are brown with lighter brown, when they are not red, and female/immature grosbeaks are brown back, tan belly, and strongly patterned face.
floraphile
So, to clarify, if the white on the face is very crisp=grosbeak. Also, is the crispness of the white on the wings something to consider? I don't recall noting it in the female Purple Finches, but I've not seen it mentioned as a differentiating feature in what I've read. Avery
Grosbeaks, at least rose-breasteds, have white flashes in their wings. Also, they are at least twice as big as purple finches. Here is a purple Finch for reference.
floraphile
I see what you mean, @Averyabout the facial patterns. It seems obvious, now. I think I now could recognize these females/immatures as Purple Finches in the absence of adult males. Thank you.
The Bird Nuts
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks also have paler pink bills and gray feet as opposed to pinkish in PUFIs.
