Hawk help...

Recommended Posts

There’s only a few hawks left hanging around the province now: Rough-legged, red-tails, northern goshawk, Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s hawks.

Wings to me look long and broad suggesting a buteo, and the absence of any dark wrist patches would rule out Rough-legged, so my bet is red-tailed. Though I’d wait for a second opinion, hard to tell. I feel obligated to try with posts from Alberta ?

I know there’s lots of reports of goshawks recently around, but I’ve never been able to figure those out unless they’re adults.

From these photos, this bird doesn't feel like a buteo to me. Size-wise, NOGO are buteo-sized but structurally very different. The underside of the wing could be a NOGO (thinner streaking) and the barring seems not as thick as COHA would be. The bird seems to be girthy and barrel-chested which would be good for NOGO, but could easily be a COHA with a full crop. Accipiter sp. would be safe here unless you have better pics.

I'd guess Gos. It feels like one and the underparts streaking goes a LONG way back. The second pic is just not sharp enough to see whether the streaking continues onto the under-tail coverts. That underparts streaking rules out all buteos that might be there in Dec.

Agreed
