sbruenjes
I saw these birds yesterday at the Raritan Bay, on the Jersey Shore in central New Jersey. I have such a hard time with gulls.. I know there are ring-bills in here, but any help would be appreciated. I have a lot of questions, but I'll try to ask a few at a time, and maybe I will get better at identifying them myself... Charlie Spencer
Also, in the second picture, what's the bird on the far right?

AlexHenry
I’m fine with all gulls in photos 1, 2, and 4 as Herring Gull. Photo 5 I don’t know. Photo 3 could be Lesser Black-backed or perhaps Great Black-backed, not certain.
IKLland
The bird on the left in first pic is a ringer, I think....

AlexHenry
It looks fine for a Herring Gull to me. Bill pattern is like that because it is not fully adult - maybe 3rd winter or something. If it was a Ring-billed Gull it would be smaller than the Herring Gull next to it.
Tony Leukering
Nary a Ringer in the pix. Herrings, GreatBack.

It's bigger than the brown gull, which cannot be a Ringer, because it's brown. A brown gull in winter on the East Coast is virtually always a Herring. Additionally, the bill pattern on the brown bird is classic first-cycle Herring.
