I'm not sure, but my impression is Red-shouldered for #1 and Northern Harrier for #2.  Let's see what others think.

@The Bird Nuts--At the time I actually saw the bird, I thought Red Shouldered, also, but when I looked at the pic, I talked myself out of that ID because I thought the tail was too long for a Buteo.

@The Bird Nuts  I thought the wings were far too broad for an accipiter--am I correct on this?  But then the long tail threw me off Buteo.   So, would the wing shape & their size relative to the body trump the tail length as far as determining Buteo vs. Accipiter?

Yes, I agree that the wings are too broad for an Accipiter, but I don't think the tail is too long for a Red-shouldered.  Red-shouldereds have longer tails than many (all?) other Buteos.

The Northern Harrier is an adult female, as it's pale below with extensive streaking and has banded primary tips. Juveniles would be cinnamon below, while adult males would have black primary tips.

Out of "Likes" for today, but thank you @Tony Leukering @Birding Boy @Aidan B for the ID on the Northern Harrier.

Yes, that rather does make sense. Those were actually my first impressions, but I brushed it off and went with accipiters. Thank you for correcting me!

Here is bird #1 cropped and lighting adjustments

you can make out the black and white end of wings, and a pale reddish color.
