Pacific Loon? Race Point Beach, Cape Cod today

Recommended Posts

I saw my first Pacific today. This is a Red-throated with the thin, upturned bill, and grayish coloration. Pacific Loons have a contrasting, straight neck border, like certain ages (don’t know exactly, presumably adults) of red-throated loons. They have more black than white on the neck, while Red-throated has more white than black (I hope I didn’t switch those around). Also, if you see a chinstrap, it’s a Pacific.

Hi all,

Going through some photos from today. This looks a little different than the RT Loons I saw - could this be pacific? Maybe?

thx

I want to add that this is an awesome shot! Somehow both the scoter and loon are pretty much in focus!
