Charlie Spencer 3,392 Posted January 21 Share Posted January 21 Okay, I don't know a Dowitcher from the downeaster Alexa, but looking at the second photo, The middle bird appears to have a shorter bill than the other two, with less distinct tail spots, and less distinct, lighter markings on the back and wings. AlexHenry 1,425 Posted January 21 Share Posted January 21 The bird to on the right in the second pic has a long enough bill that we can call it Long-billed confidently based on bill length alone. The bird immediately to its left has a shorter bill, but is still almost certainly Long-billed based on structure, plumage, location and time of year. This shows the range of variation in bill length very well - more extreme individuals are pretty distinctive, but there is overlap Quote Link to post Share on other sites
