@Pigeon I thought that initially, but every shot of the eye looks like that.  I also wondered if the eye was injured or scarred.  He was too far away for a detailed shot.

It was probably sleeping. Birds will keep that third eyelid up for a while. I might be making this up, but can they see through them a little bit?

Whatever he was, I'm glad he was there, because his weird coloring drew my attention to him in his spot in the nether regions of the far side of a lake.  I started photographing him, and that's when I noticed 2 of these pretty boys (and their gals).  First time I've seen the males in the flesh.
