Seanbirds
This is a Virginia Rail. Nice bird!
Hasan
This actually looks to be a King/Clapper Rail, a much much better bird. Edited January 28, 2021 by Hasan
Seanbirds
Just now, Hasan said: This actually looks to be a King Rail, a much much better bird. Others would probably be interested in seeing this, I would report this on ebird right away. What makes you think that?
Seanbirds
OH! Sorry! I thought this was in Missouri, not Mississippi! Now I’m leaning Clapper Rail.
IKLland
I don’t think we can put a definite ID on this bird. @ausnic44do you happen to have any other shots?
ausnic44
it ran across the road right after taking this shot, I was lucky to get this one. this is the original photo, a brackish marsh is on both sides of the road, a bridge over a natural bayou is right behind the truck. I have seen and photographed virginia, clapper, and king rails, my first thought on this one when taking the picture was that it was a virginia rail, strictly based on size. Avery
Due to the long neck, I would say King/Clapper, as well as the overall drabness. Plus, the legs aren't reddish.
Seanbirds
Yeah best left as King/Clapper or Rallus sp.
Hasan
I missed that this was Mississippi as well on my first pass... Either way, this is definitely not a Virginia. The light coloration, long neck and structure are beyond conclusive for King/Clapper.
