Juvenile Red-Tailed Hawk or Swainson's?

Recommended Posts

Juvenile Red-shouldered -- note the tail pattern, which rules out both Red-tailed and Swainson's; the dark eye, which rules out juvenile Red-tailed; and the reddish fringes to the upper wing coverts, which rules out both Red-tailed and Swainson's.  Finally, while we can not actually see the wing tip, one can imagine that the wing comes to an end shortly after disappearing behind the tail. That feature also rules out both Red-tailed and Swainson's, as they both have longer wings, the former's wing tips nearly reaching the tail tip and the latter's extending beyond the tail tip.
