KellyK 0
I saw this duck at the Temsco Pond in Juneau, Alaska at 7:00 am on May 22, 2019. I believe it is a lesser/greater scaup. What has me a bit confused is the blue-grey and rose colored bill. I can't seem to find any information or images of scaups with this bill coloration. Any info or comments would be appreciated. Thank you.
Jefferson Shank 1,978
This is a Greater Scaup. I'm not sure what is up with the bill coloration. Edited February 19 by Jefferson Shank changed from lesser to greater

Jefferson Shank 1,978
I actually like lesser here. Look at the nail. Yea, that's what I thought at first too. But look at that strong green color on the last picture and the massive bill.

Seanbirds 711
Why does this look like a Rosy-billed Pochard x Scaup hybrid?!?
Jefferson Shank 1,978
@Tony Leukering Ideas?
Tony Leukering 2,531
First, except for the base of the bill, it's not got anything in it that's apparently from a putative Rosy-bill parent, as the plumage is fine for either scaup and most features are wrong for a Rosy-bill. I think that the jury is out on which species of scaup. The bill nail seems almost intermediate in the one good view of it. It's not parallel-sided, but it's not off that by much. If anything, it's more GRSC-like than LESC-like, but I don't trust it.
