I studied French for twelve years as part of an otherwise very good public education in Canada and can barely speak it. I'm in awe of people who can do these things!

People have different skill sets.  Some can master verbal languages; some work with programming languages.  😄

Being interested plays a huge part in being successful.  I was never interested in learning another language.  I hate memorizing; that's what I have books and computers for, to remember stuff.  I dislike inconsistencies, and languages evolved with through human usage with little concern for consistency.

I don't need Google Translate.  I know enough to get something to eat, too much to drink, and start a fight all on my own, usually in that sequence.

Google Translate is like Merlin -- they can't be trusted! 😄

Oh yeah? Well, I can eat vegetables! What’s your superpower? :classic_tongue:

(That’s better than some people do, though I’m not naming any names here. For one, that would be considered rude, for another, I don’t know anybody’s dietary habits here anyway.)

Somewhere in this chain of Spanish conversation was a question about a seagull?!?! Am I correct in saying that the final ID is a Herring Gull?

Someone help a girl out here.

I'm gonna assume that Tony's right- it's a Herring.

OK I couldn't resist bombing this thread with all of the Spanish abuse going on here!

-Beer is "cerveza"; in Spain, Argentina, and a few other Latin American countries pronounce the "z" like the "th" in words like "this". In most of Latin America it's an s-sound. Ciervo is deer, and generally you don't specify the gender if you're ordering it in a meal. "Cerva" doesn't mean anything in Spanish.

-"Por qué", "porque", and "por que" do all have different meanings, but this isn't and advanced Spanish class so we won't be teaching that here.

-Google translate can be useful at times, but if you feed it garbled nonsense you can't blame it for not translating it to whatever you may have thought you were trying to say! Seriously, if you need to use a translator program use the simplest English you can and avoid idiomatic expressions, and you'll be more likely to get something that can be understood in the target language. On the other hand, if you're just playing, have fun.

-Please read the rules. Correcting people's grammar and offensive jokes about people's gender, body size, etc. are not acceptable in any language.

-Her Highness, your moderator, is also a human translator and interpreter (English - Spanish - Guatemalan Sign Language).

-Please keep discussing and finalize this ID for @Miss Marge.
