Thanks ya'll!  Definitely a lifer for me, and so cool for it to show up with another male during my power outage and 2021 snowpacolypse...brewer's blackbirds also showing well in my yard for the first time during this, together with pine siskins and pine warblers so it was a nice distraction!

It’s officially known as “Winter Storm Uri”. They gave it a name like they do for tropical storms and hurricanes.

No, it's not 'officially', and it's not like hurricanes.

The National Hurricane Center, an agency of the federal government, names hurricanes and tropical storms.  Those names are used by all organizations public and private.  The criteria for being named is based solely on wind speed, regardless of the area affected.

The Weather Channel, a private company, gives names to winter storms, and they're the only one that use those names.  You won't hear the NWS or FEMA or state agencies using those names.  One of the criteria for being named is how many people are affected.  A storm that affects a population center will be named, but a storm with the same meteorological measurements in the middle of northern Canada will not.

Sorry, pet peeve.
