Jay Songster
This bird was found outside our front door on it's side in the North West/Washington. I thought it was a king fisher, but all pictures I looked at are smaller and colorful. It has a longer black beak and black feathers tufted back on the top of the head and black to just above the eye. The cheeks neck and chest are a chestnut brown and the wings are black with black and brown shoulders, lighter markings outlining a group of feathers on the wings. Light color in a vertical line on the chest and around the start of the beak with some yellow right where the beak starts on the face. The feet are also larger and yellow. It's maybe 14 inches beak to tail.

Charlie Spencer
Can you be more specific about the location? And can you provide some information about the environment (open water, wetlands, pine forest, hardwood forest, urban, suburban, farmland, etc)? The Bird Nuts
Sounds like a Green Heron. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_heron#/media/File:Butorides_virescens2.jpg Edited July 2, 2018 by The Bird Nuts

I read the bit about the bill being longer than a Belted Kingfisher and thought of small herons. I kept trying to jam Least Bittern into the description and knew that wasn't right. I hope it turns out to be a Greenie; otherwise I won't sleep tonight.

The head is not forward, but sits back from the chest. Legs aren't as long as the heron and are bright yellow. Looks like a bird that would dive for fish. They can hold themselves in all sorts of positions and some have bright yellow legs. Your description of plumage still fits Green Heron well. Ok, thanks for the persistence Bird Nuts, the link sent earlier of the green heron didn't look like it at all, but after googling it, that's what it is. https://www.google.com/search?q=green+heron+images&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=zAHyuiRltsytEM%3A%2Cf0md0IvUSrAi_M%2C_&usg=__wMdeSCSf4sNrxr-HU9VdDRpiBD4%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjUsOXS-oHcAhXp6YMKHeg8D4UQ9QEIKzAA#imgrc=wER9x1Cb1is6MM: Go to the top right image with the fish in it's mouth and that's a good representation.

Actually the picture you sent was close, it was the shape that threw me off. The bird I saw was deceased, which may have put the head in a different position . The computer monitor I was using also changed the chest coloration to a maroon. The main picture that comes up on the link above is the closest. Thanks again.
The Bird Nuts
Ah, I hadn't noticed you had written "This bird was found outside our front door on it's side". It must've collided with something...that's too bad. :(
TheWigeoning
Sorry to hear it died. I've seen night herons too... (black crowned; yellow crowned). They bear a resemblance to green herons too. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Black-crowned_Night-Heron/id
