Jerry Friedman
Some recent arths (did I just make up that word)? Northern or Virile Crayfish, Faxonius virilis, or so I was told at iNaturalist (from the same spot as my latest ode photos): Fireweed Borer, Albuna pyramidalis (ID from BugGuide), a clearwing moth that seems to be a wasp mimic: Tiger Beetle sp, maybe a variant of tranquebarica, or not? Clip
@neilpa The Swallowtail you have as Indra is actually a Black Swallowtail. Location for one is key. The one undamaged tail is also too long for Indra. No promises on the rest for ids. I have a busy next couple of days. 2
Clip
@neilpa I believe your Michigan Sulphur is an Orange Sulphur based on location and some of the smaller marks on the wings. Keep in mind I an not an expert just a hobbyest with a book. 2
neilpa
Thanks @Clip 6 hours ago, Clip said: Keep in mind I an not an expert just a hobbyest with a book. It's still helpful for me. Jerry Friedman
23 hours ago, BirdNrd said: Dragonfly sp. That's a darner (family Aeshnidae), specifically either Aeshna or Rhionaeschna, I'm pretty sure. When I click on it I think I can see the whiter color on the sides of the black T on top of its head than below the base, which is good for Rhionaeschna, and I think the cerci are right for Rhioaeschna too. So checking the range maps in Paulson and assuming this was in in or near SLO County, I'm down to California Darner and my friend the Blue-eyed Darner, and Cali doesn't have the blue stripes on top of the "shoulders" (known to the pros as "frontal stripes", for reasons that need not detain us). I'm saying Blue-eyed Darner.

Jerry Friedman
My life Mountain Emerald! In fact, my life dragonfly-with-emerald-in-its-name. I stood there taking pictures by the methods I recommended to @Seanbirds, probably with no success but I haven't looked at all of them yet. When it took breaks from flying around like mad, it perched vertically in the grass, as you see. Finally it landed somewhere where I could see it and photograph it. Pretty sure this is Chrysobothris, a member of the metallic wood-boring beetle family (Buprestidae), and since there are 134 species in the genus in the U.S. and Canada, I'm going to leave it there. I think Bar-winged has more black on the leading edge of the wings. But I've never seen any of these species that I remember.
