Indeed it is! I'm pretty sure I have seen more than one male in huge web too.

I just showed the photo to husband and he wondered and now so do I if she eats the male after mating??

That would definitely explain why you might see more than one male in the web. ?

Found some more bug shots from the macro lens. I'm tempted to start a macro thread. We had one on the old forum. Some of my best macro work is of things other than birds and bugs.

Unknown Insect 1 cicada head on DSC_0123a blue dragonfly unknown Wood Bee wasp

ok, I have lots more, but I'll stop.

I think you should start that thread. It would be very cool to see macro shots.

Oh look what I found this morning. I knew I had a Two-tailed Swallowtail some where in all my photos but I didn't even have recorded on my Butterfly life list. I looked for it a month or so ago but didn't find it. I have kept my eyes open for it in the mean time. Still no luck. But, yesterday I took a photo I needed to post on ebird with my back up camera. I keep this camera in the car at all times so I have one just in case. Like yesterday I did not set out to bird but had some time to kill...any way I needed to post one photo on ebird from that cameras memory card which I apparently had not download in long time and found the Two-tailed Swallowtail photo I knew I had somewhere. With it now added to my butterfly life list I'm at 120 species.

Zale Lunate I think. I'm posting this moth for luck as tonight we have family coming over for dinner (create your burrito with variety of ingredients offered to then smoother in homemade green chile. Tres Leches Cake for dessert.) We are then going to wait for it to get dark. Once dark we have things set up with a white sheet and bright lights to try to attract some moths. I got a moth book for my birthday so then I can have fun trying to get them ided. Hoping for a good turn out but it might be a little late in the season. Fingers crossed and all that.

This little experiment was a complete bust? Well except for the food. It was yummy. We only had two moths show up. Our very first visitors were a couple of Mole Crickets. Otherwise very few bugs at all. The only exception were mosquitos that ate my son alive. Three other people out there and he was the only one being feasted on. Usually it is him and I both. I will check my camera in a bit see if any of the photos I took turned out. I want to try this again. I just think my timing was bad.

I have no idea when moth season in Florida is.  Any chance you could get into mosquito photography?

Isn't the name Lunate Zale, by the way?

According to my new book at least some of the species I was hoping for should still be active. Whether they come to the sheet set up it does not specify. However, we are already having some rather cool nights, which be effecting activity. Remember I'm in North Florida so we can get cooler. Haha! Sadly, with my new camera that is doubtful. It just does not zoom and focus well on small close insects...And to your last question yes.

Okay so here are the two Moth's that showed up for our sheet and bright light experiment the other night. I spent some time yesterday trying to id them with my new moth book without success. So if anyone else thinks they can id them that would be great. I'm also including a Mole Cricket that came to our little experiment and what I believe is a Green Lacewing that showed up. I included another older mole cricket photo just for fun

Ohhhhh! Looky what I found today. Yep one of my favorites TIGER BEETLES!!! What a beautiful blue color! Sadly, it is also a Festive Tiger Beetle. A variant of the species but still a Festive Tiger Beetle. So it does not add to my Tiger Beetle life list but wow that color is beautiful.

Having added another variation to my Festive Tiger Beetle sightings I thought I do a Festival of Festive Tiger Beetles.? The uni-colored one are Florida the multi-colored ones are Colorado. For the love of Tiger Beetles!

I had too much fun with this Whirlabout Skipper this morning. It actually let me get close enough with the camera lens I bump the flower it was on and it still did not fly away. Had more fun once I got a chance to loo at the photos. I didn't even know I'd been photo bombed by a spider and some kind beetle. The shots below are all of the same individual from different angles.

Their webs were suspended over the boardwalk in the Mangroves.  It was a panic attack inducing experience walking under spiders the size of my hand...lol

I fully understand! I almost walked into two face first that had constructed their web right across the path at one area we were birding. After 3 attempts to get a bird there and finally getting a poor view of the bird we were looking for we high tailed it out of there and never returned. Most of the places we bird away from the coast even a bit have them in the summer but most don't have their webs right across the paths. Thank goodness! I understand they aren't venomous but the bite is painful and the web very strong and sticky. I do not want first hand knowledge! Here are just a few more panic inducing spiders all from birding adventures in Florida. The last photo was sooooooo cool yet sooooooooooooo very creepy to see. It had rained the day before and was foggy so every Bowl and Dollie Spider web in the area was highlighted by the conditions. I love photographing spiders from distance but truly do not like them.

Thought this was a new Plume Moth for me at first, but I think it might be some type of Crane Fly.  iNat wasn't a huge help with the ID.  Posted to BugGuide and iNat.

BugGuide.net confirmed it as Pedicia inconstans.   A type of Crane Fly.  There are only 38 observations of this on iNat, and Michigan is out of normal range.  First data point in BugGuide for Michigan.

Very nice!  (My photos of crane flies don't get identified anywhere *whine whine*.)
