Red-footed Cannibal Flies

069 (2).JPG

A friend and I saw a pair of these copulation. We heard them first. I had binoculars and spotted them, then just handed him the bins and told him where to look. All he said was “Eww, what the %#*& is that!?!” Certainly a extra weird and big bug!

Yeah. I remember trying to find a viceroy for the longest time before I finally saw one, and it was pretty obvious with the size difference ?

Size? Posture/shape and flight style are the biggest giveaways for me. I didn't notice a huge size difference...

This Black-rimmed Prominent (lifer) surprised me yesterday morning when I, on a whim, woke up at 0430 and decided to check the canvas.

I think this is a Hanham's Owlet.

I'm generally not a person that's afraid of spiders, in most cases I think they're pretty cool. Came across pictures of these guys though &  I'm pretty sure I'd run away screaming if I saw one;

Am I the only one?

I am afraid of spiders!!! I have gotten better about them especially in the wild. In my house is whole different story. Spiders in my house die. I may or may not photograph them first. The latter more likely. I don't do Facebook so I didn't look at your link. Probably a good thing since I don't like spiders any way. But, if you have a different way to share it I would take a look.

Cool looking spider!! I'd love to see one of those. I'm not afraid of spiders. If it was up to me I'd leave spiders in the house to catch flies and mosquitos. I remove them, at the boss's request (demand!) and place them outside alive and well. Even the Black Widows that occasionally find their way in.

Here's another non Facebook link;

I'm generally not afraid of them either. I wanted to get a Tarantula at one point but my wife ruled that one out. Something about the abdomen on these guys really creeps me out for some reason though ?.

The mystique of the Scorpionfly kind of goes away when you see it mowwing on hickroy nut pieces, and not some smaller insect.
