Interesting, thanks. I have a lot to learn about gulls, and if those primaries are too dark I'm going to have to change my reporting practices...

No. Many adult Larus exhibit dark markings on the bill in winter, some extensive enough to form a ring. Yes, the tertials have black splotches, but that is not all that rare in adult Larus. At least, all of the gulls that I have seen with such black and well-defined patches -- either in pp coverts or on tertials -- have shown no other sign of immaturity. However, if the dark is less than black and ill-defined, there are nearly always other signs of immaturity, such that I was comfortable ageing them as not adults.
