Best eBird Photos!

What is really so sad it that it is on the top 5 photos for the county, so people must have seen it.

The photo only has two ratings so it makes me wonder how it got in the top 5. I just double checked and there's no criteria for accurate identification in the ratings guidelines. I guess the name of the photo has nothing to do with the quality of the photo, and it can always be flagged and corrected later without affecting the photo's rating. Definitely not a quality observation but a real nice photo.

I don't particularly care how the photo is rated one way or the other, it a nice photo, not great but nice. What I really was commenting on was that no one had noticed that it was not added as the right species.

How does every one like this Black Vulture photo?, https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/318126461

I see somebody reported it. It should get changed by the reviewers. It is a great photo, though!

I take pics for my own edification & post to ebird as an efficient way to keep up with my Photo Lifers.  I don't rate my pics if they are bad, I just leave them "reviewless" and keep them as a placeholder and hope for a better photo in the future. But with this last batch of photos I am uploading from Costa Rica, someone is rating my pics as I post them, giving poor ratings. If they are unrated to start with, how would giving a low rating help?

What are peoples thoughts on these two photos? I'm specifically asking about the lighting and composition. The sun is clearly behind the birds, but the metadata says that flash did not fire This photographer is amazing, but I'm just wondering how he accomplished these shots. Looking in the birds' eyes, it seems as if some flash/reflection technique was used. Thoughts?

I just saw those and was thinking the same thing. Definitely had another source of light. Spotlight maybe, Lol. Nice photos, not entirely sure what to make of it though.

I wonder if maybe some third party flash units don't register with the camera's exif file. It sure looks like flash was used to this amateur.

Awesome images, that contributor takes great photos. I’ve been lucky enough to meet him here. I’m guessing that an additional flash unit was used, not the pop up flash on the camera. Like a flash extender, or off camera flash. I don’t believe that would show up in the exif data.

A more realistic example from the same contributor. I must be in the minority since I'm not a fan of that photo but 100+ five stars disagree.

I think that photo can be captured without flash. There is no obvious flash usage in the eye of the bird, or anywhere for that matter. I think this could be captured and then lifting the shadows in post processing (editing) could get the bird bright.

Yea, that’s what I meant by “more realistic”.

Disclaimer: not trying to get people to rate my photos higher!

I figured I’d ask you guys why these two of my photos are rated 4 stars. Again I’m not asking for higher/more ratings, I just want to know why and how to rate photos better especially mine, since I took them and probably would be biased for that reason. Thanks!
