Why’s the average 4? Did someone give it one maybe?

I'm not sure how advanced your math skills are, but averages are calculated by adding your ratings together and then dividing that total by the number of ratings.  A rating of 5 added to a rating of 3 is a total rating score of 8, divide that by the 2 ratings and you end up with an average of 4. I hope that helps explain why the average is 4.

While we're on topic, the macaulay library does average everyones ranking to give the star rating that's shown below, its process for ranking photos are different. Every photo is given a point score from 0-5 which I believe is based on a mix of total number of ratings, and what percentage of high (5 star) ratings it gets. For example, here's the data for @IKLland's Mallard photo that was just being discussed.

The 'rating rank' is how high the photo would appear in any time the library is filtered by 'most popular'. Just thought this would interesest some people sense everyone in this topic seems pretty obsessed with ratings.

It's not terrible at all. It's even in the top photos.

It's in the top photos because it has a ton of good ratings.  It's a great photo, but people don't understand that just because it's a rare, unique, or interesting photo doesn't necessarily mean it's a 5-star photo according to eBird.

Good point. But, if I saw this on a photo quiz, I would probably rate it a five.

@IKLland Do you have access to a phone? The reason I ask is because Lightroom ( a photo editing app) is free for mobile, and it’s really helpful to adjust stuff like exposure, cropping, etc. I just found out about this a couple months ago, wish I had known sooner myself!

So, would Lightroom be free for an apple ipad?
