Charlie Spencer
Clapper Rails. Russell Burgess Coast Preserve, NE Horry County, SC. July 2022. I spotted one adult first casually hunting beside the boardwalk. It would call occasionally and be answered. Eventually the second bird emerged from the grass, along with the three black tennis balls. Mom and Dad would wander around, catching fiddler crabs and then hustling back to the young. They hit the jackpot with the recently deceased fish and were appropriately mouthful mournful. The family remained visible for at least 15 minutes, moving along open areas around and under the boardwalk, before disappearing into the marsh.

Even the ducklings from the same batch don't all come out the same.

In all the years that I've had video capability, 15 years or more, I have only made a handful of videos and most of them were to document maintenance issues with my previous landlady. I don't even think of shooting video of birds unless I specifically set out with video in mind before hand, such as when I know we'll be hand feeding birds at my nephew's cottage. I suppose I should sign up with you guys for lessons on how to get more out of our cameras....I'll make sure to look into that later. Words I have never used before on this subject. ?
