Osprey Subspecies - pos Ridgway’s

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

This morning I encountered a very interesting Osprey. It seemed to have a pretty pale head, but I’m not sure if that’s enough to determine subspecies (Carolinensis vs Ridgeway’s). Brevard County, Florida. Many normal looking Ospreys around. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this bird!

Looking at eBird, this is the furthest north ever record and 1st county record.

That’s a great record! Congrats! I found one in the Keys, but that’s where such would be expected, particularly if more birders paid attention to such.

Thank you Tony! I did see your record when looking at their sightings. I’m sure there’s more out there, but the Osprey abundance down here is crazy so it’s probably easy to pass them off as the expected subspecies.

Oop.  Was too focused on getting the ending right 😆
