insanityslave
seen today in central nc the streaking on the belly had me second guessing... still pretty sure its a green heron, even though it was considerably smaller than any green heron ive seen to date. ive looked through pics on aab and i didnt see that streaking... which makes me consider a bittern.... so under the assumption this is a green heron, why does it have that streaking? perhaps due to its age? thanks! Tony Leukering
There are ZERO juvenile Green Herons at this time of year.
insanityslave
so no one has an answer as to the streaking?
Hasan
I'm not sure what streaking you are talking about, the area that would have streaking if it were a juvenile (not that it is a juvenile, because it isn't) is obscured. If I am seeing things right, the bird has it's back to the camera and what you are seeing is the white edges of the wing feathers, not the birds belly feathers. I think.
