My rule is if I can see or hear it from my yard, it's a yard bird. I only count birds that I get photos of or that I see AND get an audio recording of in or from our yard. If I only hear a bird in the distance...too bad. It'll probably eventually visit my yard anyway.
chipperatl
#154 - Black-billed Cuckoo. I managed to hear it call for 30 seconds or so, just over the noise a meeting for work. Very thankful it finally cooled off enough to have windows open.
neilpa
Three new flyovers this evening, Violet-green Swallow, Canada Goose, and an Osprey carrying dinner that I just barely caught. Brings me to a whopping total of 39.

Clip
I have a total yard bird count of 102 species in a little over 2 1/2 years. I have only recorded 49 for 2021 but I have been very lax in creating ebird list for the yard this year. My favorite yard to date:

We do see more females in the yard than males. Not sure why that is.

I almost never see females, but if I went out right now in ten minutes I could find a dozen males.

They are there but you may have to look closer they blend in pretty good. In my case seeing more females it is probably because they come to the feeders more readily than the males. Away from the backyard feeders I see more males too.
Birding Boy
American White Pelicans! Finally stopped pouring rain here, so I went into the yard to do some skywatching. Didn't see much, got bored, and proceeded to clear up part of the yard... and happened to look up and behold the 9th county records then flew over. Thankfully I still had my camera with me. https://ebird.org/checklist/S90819198

That would be completely awesome to have shorebird habitat even if temporary in your yard. I still need Baird's for life…
