That's so cool though! That would be completely awesome to have shorebird habitat even if temporary in your yard. I still need Baird's for life…

Yeah, it’s gotten me (not cheating with flyovers here) Canada Goose, Mallard, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Blue-winged Teal, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Cattle Egret, Sora, Spotted Sandpiper, Killdeer, Least Sandpiper, Baird’s Sandpiper,   Wilson’s Snipe, Solitary Sandpiper, Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Purple Martin, Northern Waterthrush, Common Yellowthroat, Bobolink and Yellow-headed Blackbird.

Cheating with flyovers?!?! That’s all I got here! ? But dang, that’s amazing! More shorebirds than my average day of shorebird in my county haha. You better make it a wildlife sanctuary at this rate ?

Well, I've got to have something going for me! My yard list is the only thing I can show off without being embarrassed! Definitely not checklist streaks or photography. :classic_tongue:

I don't understand how some yards have so many more birds than others!

Well, I think most of it depends on the habitat and food availability in and around the yard.  Native plants, good cover, water source, etc.  Also, there will be more flyovers if there are mountains nearby that create thermals, for instance, or a river or body of water that the birds follow.

Yes, very true. We usually get the usual migrants, house wren, common grackle, and we are fairly near a river. We do have native plants and a small wood in back, so our yard is much shadier and probably supports more birds than at least the neighboring yards. Unfortunately, we had to take our feeders down because NOTHING deters our squirrels, but that doesn't seem to have affected the number of birds much. We also have an elderberry bush and several Dogwoods which are a good food source.
