Does Merlin actually differentiate body parts and use them as the ID, or just match the overall feel for the photo with the photos used to train the model? I'm very much assuming the latter but haven't been able to find out better. It's essentially a really good amateur birder, who has seen every species in North America, but doesn't know any of the field marks, which means it makes hilarious errors. I once fed it this picture as an experiment, and it suggested Rock Pigeon, which is the kind of inhuman error that these systems kick up.
